Live action trailer for Guild Wars 2 is…a little weird

A man is covered with ash, reaching for a television. Someone in a hoodie runs from helicopters in an alleyway and spraypaints the wall. And a woman swims in a sunken apartment building. This is…Guild Wars 2?

While the trailer is pretty evocative and is certainly eye-catching I think its fantasy setting somehow got lost in the mix. Sure, it switches into the video game at the later half of the trailer, but what the hell was all that other shit? Compare this to the live-action Skyrim trailer from last year which literally had me shouting Fus Roh Dah in my office for the next week. This one is much more confusing than it is inspiring.

At least those WoW promos had Mr. T.

Oh well, I’m sure film students will love this, so as long as they’re happy am I right? Full disclosure: I was once a film student myself so live action trailers for video games always catch my attention. I like to see how people will depict the game at hand. This one takes a huge side-step to present the theme (?) of the game, I guess. Its interesting, not sure if it will drive any sales. Forgettable at the end of the day.

About Ryan Saul

Hailing from Portland, OR I work by day and blog by night. I like to consider myself a video game connoisseur, playing as many new things as I can get my hands on. Its hard to hold me down to one game for very long before I move on to the next big thing. Luckily, that works pretty well in terms of video game blogging.
