How to power-level Alchemy and Speechcraft in Skyrim

Two of Skyrim’s most elusive skills are Speechcraft and Alchemy, they require a lot of grinding away at the A button, which seems simple enough at first, but becomes frustrating once you realize the amount of times you need to do it.  Power-leveling both speechcraft and alchemy go hand-in-hand with this guide.  Hit the jump for the detailed guide and video!

  1. During quests and roaming, gather as many ingredients as possible – flowers, butterflies, sabre-cat eyes, etc.
  2. Find any alchemist shop in one of the major cities – Arcadia’s Cauldron in Whiterun was my primary choice.
  3. Eat any ingredients with all four “UNKNOWN” attributes, this will discover the first attribute for making potions.  Each time you discover an attribute your alchemy skill goes up.
  4. Talk to the vendor and buy all ingredients available – typical cost is anywhere from 1000 to 2500 gold (you will make this back easily).  Each time you buy or sell your speechcraft skill goes up.
  5. Use the near-by alchemy table (there is always one right in the alchemy shop) and craft as many potions as possible.  Each time you create a potion your alchemy skill goes up.
  6. BONUS: Use 2 known ingredients as your base potion and mix in a third, unknown ingredient, this occasionally discovers new attributes, levels you up more and lets you brew more potions.
  7. Sell back all of your crafted potions, the vendor should have much more gold from selling you ingredients.  Again, selling increases speechcraft.
  8. Rinse and repeat – fast travel to other cities while you wait for the used vendor to get more money and ingredients.

    Power-leveling my ass…
What level are your speechcraft and alchemy skills?
How long did you spend to get that high?

Honestly this is the best way I’ve seen, I do this in every town now and its starting to go up compared to what I had before which was zilch

Seems like the same generic strategy for leveling enchanting and smithing:
-collect/buy materials to make armor or soul gems to enchant
-repeat the smithing or enchanting process as stock
-sell items back to mitigate cost of purchasing materials or eventually make a profit
-wait 24hours in shop so merchant has more materials/money and repeat

This takes a long time to level up this way. Don’t get me wrong it is definately the optimal way I’ve found to legimately level this type of skill, but in no way do I consider power-leveling. Your title built up my hopes and then the article just as quickly razed them…

lol well the trick is that I’m using alchemy compared to other things. Ingredients are readily available in large quantities and for cheap and when I realized this it became apparent I could use this with powering through potion making. I realize its the same idea as leveling smithing, but would you not agree that you are power leveling through that as well when all you make are leather bracers? Also this is probably not intended for somebody at level 5 billion.

razed was a poor word choice, people always misinterpret that to be a typo of raised, which doesn’t make sense in the context. I should use a synonym such as destroyed

Haha, well you’re not dumb…I had a philosophy TA in college ding a paper because she said I didn’t review my paper very well and cited that I mispelled raised. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her that she was an idiot and that majoring in philosophy suited her very well.

Giant toe + wheat is fortify health, this gives most XP

Made a new character…time to craft 1000 leather bracers again
