What is the Sonic Cycle?

The Sonic Cycle is a meme of sorts created years ago that has somehow withstood the test of each Sonic release since its inception.

Admittedly I’ve fallen into the cycle several times.  Being a rabid Sonic fan back in the day, I’ve yearned for the day of his eventual return to glory.  I mean Team Sonic puts out a game at least once per year, you’d think they would get ONE right.

Since the Sonic Cycle was defined in 2008 the following games have been released:

  • Sonic Unleashed (2008)
  • Sonic and the Black Knight (2009)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (2010)
  • Sonic Generations (soon to be released 2011)
And that’s not even counting the slew of ridiculous racing and Olympic games our blue buddy’s starred in too.  Each game has generated the sort of initial hype you see for every new M. Night Shyamalan movie, followed by skepticism, followed by utter disappointment and yearning for the days of old.  Wow, come to think of it, M. Night has the exact same cycle.
So there you go.  Will the Sonic Cycle ever be broken?  Perhaps Generations will finally let him free.

About Ryan Saul

Hailing from Portland, OR I work by day and blog by night. I like to consider myself a video game connoisseur, playing as many new things as I can get my hands on. Its hard to hold me down to one game for very long before I move on to the next big thing. Luckily, that works pretty well in terms of video game blogging.

I’m looking forward to generations, had real fun with the demo, although it scares me that they didn’t include a 3D sonic stage :/
